Sometimes you book a midsize and end up with a 4Runner for a thousand-plus mile road trip. At least I can drive on the beach now - good thing gas is cheap!

Safe travels! If you have any questions about eastern NC, just reply to this comment. I’m on here pretty regularly.

I forgot to mention BBQ. If you only go to one bbq joint around here, I can’t recommend the Skylight Inn bbq in Ayden enough.

Yes thanks man! I'll hit you up with my route for some pointers tomorrow

Here’s my route through NC tomorrow - currently doing more backroad type stuff until hooking up with 95 to get across SC. Is there a more sensible way to do this? I want to minimize my 95 time as much as possible so if you could recommend an alternate to that that still gets me to Savannah in under 12 hours that would be great.

You’ve picked a solid route, but you could minimize 95 even more if you plotted a route from Nags Head > kinston nc > Wilmington NC > myrtle Beach sc > Charleston sc > savannah. 541 miles, 10 hr 29 min according to Google maps. You could also take that route partially and then cut over to 95 after Wilmington or myrtle Beach. It would mean going through some more populated areas, but you’d be riding on the coast and avoiding 95 almost entirely.

I 100% agree with the first part of the trip. 264 is pretty great.

How much do you want to be on backrooms vs just roads that aren’t interstates? You could take 264 to Washington nc (nice little town, check out bill’s hot dogs, cash only), and then pick up route 17 and take that almost the entire drive there. You’d pass through New Bern (nice historic town, birthplace of pepsi), Wilmington NC (basically the best place in eastern nc, check out chops deli or the front street brewery), myrtle Beach, Charleston, and only like 39 miles on 95. It’s not backrooms except for the first part, but it’s not interstate.

Actually when I turned on the avoid highways option on google maps just now that’s the route it gave me too. It looks good, I think that’s what I’m gonna do! Thanks for the help man!

Haha. I never promised to provide sage local advice that you couldn’t find by checking a box on google maps. 17 is a solid road with portions that are 55 with 2 lanes each way and portions that are one lane each way with varying speed limits. If you have time to stop and check out some towns along the way you’ve got a few nice options to choose from. Enjoy the desolation of 264. It looks like it just reopened, at least for now. You should be able to see evidence of the fire on your drive.

When you are on 17 near new bern, Google maps might take you on 43 as a shortcut around the city. If you stay on 17 there is a really nice bridge with a great view of the city. I’d recommend staying on 17

So we got off 17 in order to seek out Skylight Inn BBQ, which was so freakin good. Then we ended up just taking the backroads that the “avoid highways” option Maps gave us - not much to see but very very scenic. And totally empty! I can’t believe how few cars I saw between OBX and the outskirts of Savannah.

Also they had just opened up 264 like a day before we passed through and it was wild. The burned area was huge - nothing but infinite scorched tree trunks on both sides of the road for miles. It was true hellscape, except it smelled pretty good and I felt bad about enjoying that. Few power poles burnt to the ground too with the wires all over. We were the only ones on the road save for a few fire trucks.

I’m really glad to hear that you enjoyed the Skylight Inn. The family that runs it opened up a second location about 6 minutes from where I live. It is dangerous having good bbq so close by.

I’m going to have to check out 264 now that it’s reopened. It sounds crazy. I’m not surprised that it was so empty. I think I passed maybe 9 cars the last time I drove to OBX. I hope you enjoyed the emptiness of eastern NC. It took some getting used to after living in PA.
